Duke SAF Student Chapter

Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, the Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry profession in the US. SAF’s mission is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and to use the knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and future availability of forest resources to benefit society.

The Nicholas School of the Environment, then the School of Forestry, was founded by Dean Clarence F. Korstian in 1938 and has been accredited by the Society of American Foresters since 1939. Dr. Korstian joined the Duke University faculty in 1931 as the first Duke Forest Manager and set out to create the demonstration and research forest that is now known as the Duke Forest.

The student chapter facilitates student involvement at the local and national levels by encouraging attendance at SAF conferences and meetings, promoting the forestry program at the Nicholas School, and organizing campus activities including community service and cookouts in Duke Forest.

2011 SAF Christmas Tree Fundraiser

Thank you for your interest in ordering a Christmas Tree from Duke University's Student Chapter of the Society of American Foresters.

Tree pre-order sales are over.

The two pick-up days will be:
Sunday, November 27th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Trees will be available for pickup at the Duke Forest Maintenance Shop on the pickup dates. There will be a limited number of trees and handmade wreaths available for purchase during the pickup times. The Duke Forest Maintenance Shop is located off of Erwin Road on Lemur Lane next to the Duke Lemur Center.

Exploring how Forest Technology, Biomass, and Climate
Change are affecting forests of the Southeast

"No single dominant force of change will affect the forests of the South. Rather, a combination of socioeconomic and biophysical factors will reshape the forests of the South, and their interaction may well amplify the direct effects. The Southern Forest Futures Report provides the perfect framework to explore challenges that are relevant to professionals in a broad range of sectors including our local forestry community, natural resource managers, ecologists, and professionals working in policy, energy, sustainability, and academia. The 5^th Annual Duke Forestry Symposium will follow the chain of custody as the progress of these issues are traced from research through policy and into application. Please join us for this very exciting day of presentations.

2011 SAF Christmas Tree Fundraiser - Order Form

The Duke University Chapter of the Society of American Foresters is once again selling Christmas trees and wreaths as an annual fundraiser!

This year, we are offering smaller trees as well, to help make homes of all sizes a little merrier. In addition, SAF students will be making wreaths for sale on the tree pick up days, and will be sold for $15-$20.

Pre-orders for trees are now being accepted through November 6th, so place your order today! You can pay online through our secure credit card payment site. Simply click on the tree you'd like to order; all links direct to the Nicholas School web site.

Frequently asked questions:

When can I pick up my tree?

Trees are available for pickup on Sunday, November 27th and Saturday, December 3rd.

Where can I pick up my tree?

Trees will be available for pickup at the Duke Forest Maintenance Shop on the pickup dates. Directions will be sent to all purchasers via email.

Can I just get a tree without pre-ordering?

Maybe, but only limited extra trees will be ordered. Plus, you won't be able to use a credit card unless you pay online!

Can I pre-order a wreath?

We are not currently taking pre-orders for wreaths, but there will be plenty of wreaths made by SAF students on the pickup dates. As these dates are finalized, they will be posted on this website, so check back frequently!

Whom does this fundraiser support?

Proceeds from the tree sale will go directly toward Duke's Society of American Foresters chapter and will help support events, including our annual symposium in November and educational and networking opportunities for chapter members.

Are the trees organic?

While we will no longer be growing our own organic trees, the farm from which the trees are purchased practices integrated pest management and keeps pesticide use to a minimum, making these trees more environmentally-friendly than most.

Christmas Tree Sales

Thank you all for a massively successful Christmas Tree Sale!!! We will be selling trees from Western North Carolina again next year as our own crop continues to mature. The trees will be Fraser Firs and will come in many sizes. This fundraiser helps raise funds for our Chapter's start-up organic Christmas Tree Farm and other events such as our annual Forestry Symposium. Limited parking is available the Bryan Center Garage. We suggest coming early to avoid the basketball game traffic later in day.

From Greensboro and Points West
• Via 1-85 North: Exit onto N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway).
• Take first exit off Durham Freeway onto 15-501 S. toward Chapel Hill.
• Stay in right lane, and take second exit (#107), marked Duke Univ. West Campus, to N.C. 751.
• Turn LEFT onto N.C. 751 S., and go under the freeway.
• At third traffic light, go left onto Science Dr.
• Drive straight through the next traffic light at Towerview Dr, continue down and up the hill and the Bryan Center will be on your right.
• To park, turn right at the sign for the Bryan Center and park in the parking garage.

From Richmond and Points North
• Via I-85 South: In Durham, take the left-lane exit (#174B) for US 15-501 South Bypass –

Dave Cass

Dave is a 1st year Master of Environmental Management student with interests in community-based forestry and family forests. He was very excited to attend the 2009 SAF Convention and finally learn what are the correct terminology for his passions. He hopes to use forest resources as a means for economic and social development and cultural heritage preservation in marginalized communities. Dave's previous experience was as an environmental consultant performing, among many other things, wetland delineations, so plants were not entirely a new thing for him. Dave is amazed by the number of different trees in the world; there must be like a bazillion! The photo of Dave is from the Acadia National Park in the great State of Maine, where there are no snakes.
